About Bridges to Hope

Founded in 1989, Bridges to Hope is a food aid centre located in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Our mission is to provide dignified and accessible assistance to those experiencing food insecurity. We provide low-barrier food bank services and related programming to individuals and families in the St. John’s-Metro region, serving an average of 1400 individuals per month.

Bridges to Hope has a small staff team, with most daily activities undertaken by volunteers. We engage a volunteer team of roughly 40 individuals who fill orders in our food bank, cook and bake in our kitchen, and assist with other programming and events.

About the Role

The Volunteer Coordinator oversees the management of volunteers at Bridges to Hope including recruitment, training, communications, and day-to-day supervision. This is an active and hands-on role, ideal for an outgoing person who is passionate about building community and connecting people around a shared mission.

Job Duties

Volunteer Coordination

  • Oversees use of Volunteer Management Software (Better Impact) at Bridges to Hope, ensuring files are kept up-to-date;

  • Prepares a monthly volunteer schedule and communicates with volunteers about scheduling needs, availability, and other related matters;

  • Supervises volunteers, delegating to ensure necessary tasks are completed in a timely manner;

  • Coordinates group volunteer opportunities;

  • Ensures all volunteers adhere to the organization’s Food Safety practices at all times;

  • Fulfills volunteers’ duties when adequate shift coverage cannot be found;

  • Gathers and responds to volunteer feedback on an ongoing basis;

  • Writes and distributes Bridges to Hope’s monthly volunteer newsletter;

  • Maintains and grows Bridges to Hope’s volunteer recognition efforts.

Volunteer Recruitment

  • Oversees Bridges to Hope’s online volunteer application form;

  • Continuously assesses upcoming changes in volunteer availability and recruits new volunteers as necessary, ensuring proper screening protocols are maintained;

  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive volunteer training plan;

  • Leads training and orientation for new volunteers.

Operational Support

  • Coordinates with other staff to oversee evening food hamper service and mobile food bank, attending these shifts as needed;

  • Supports food procurement efforts as needed;

  • Operates Bridges to Hope vehicles when needed to ensure operational needs are met;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile

The candidate must have:

  • Previous volunteer coordination experience

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed records and complete tasks with minimal supervision

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • A valid driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and a clean driving record (to be provided upon hiring). The candidate must be comfortable operating a large vehicle on occasion

  • Food Safety Certification within 3 months of hiring (employer to provide)

Candidate Eligibility

The candidate must be eligible to work in Canada. A Criminal Records Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check will be required upon offer.

Working Conditions

  • Location: This is an in-person role at our main office, 37 Cookstown Road in St. John’s

  • Working hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM with occasional evenings and weekends

  • Salary: $42,000 per annum

  • Duration: Permanent full-time

  • Benefits: Mandatory extended health and dental plan (after 3 months), vacation starting at 15 days per year, 13 paid sick days per year
